The Edmonds School District is holding an election on Tuesday, February 14th to renew their Technology/Capital Levy. The ballots are in the mail now.

PROPOSITION NO. 1

Replacement School Programs & Operation Levy

The Board of Directors of Edmonds School District No. 15, serving the communities of Brier, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, and Woodway, adopted Resolution No. 11-36, concerning a proposition to acquire technology for student learning, and make safety and building system improvements. This proposition would authorize the District to replace an expiring levy by levying the following excess taxes upon the taxable property within the District for support of the District’s Capital Projects Fund. The replacement levy collection averages $7.85 million per year for each of the four years, 2013 through 2016. The rates per thousand are projected to be at 44 cents, the same rate collected now.

Hazelwood Elementary Marched for Civil Rights

Hazelwood Elementary Marched for Civil Rights

Learning about our history is important not just in Edmonds but everywhere and keeping our kids educated on our history is a great way for us all to continue to remember. The Edmonds School District schools all provided some form of Martin Luther King, Jr. recognitions and educational opportunities for the students.

One school really stood out and took a different path toward educating their students. They marched right out the door!

On January 13th, Hazelwood Elementary School students conducted a Civil Rights March around the school track which included waving posters, banners and picket signs. The themed day kicked off with an all-school Civil Rights assembly then teachers taught grade-level appropriate lessons. Students also made signs that either reflected historical Civil Rights messages or ideas related to the current school community. All Hazelwood students marched as part of the event celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day the following Monday.

Way to continue the "Dream", Hazelwood!

Free tax prep and e-file at Edmonds Community College

It's that time again...time to start gathering your receipts, digging out your calculator, and file your taxes. It's a daunting task to many but not to worry, Edmonds Community College is here to help!

EdCC told us, "Every year Edmonds Community College offers free income tax return preparation and e-filing to US citizens and residents with incomes of less than $49,000. This service is sponsored by an IRS program called, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Volunteers are taught using IRS training guidelines and are IRS certified to provide confidential tax preparation to qualified taxpayers.  Last year, Edmonds Community College helped more than 400 campus and community members file their tax returns."

From February 7th through March 16th and again from April 3rd to April 13th, confidential tax return preparation will be offered on a drop in basis. This service will take place in Mountlake Terrace Hall room 212. Fine print: No tax preparation will be done during spring break (March 17th through April 2nd).

F.A.C.E. (Families And Communities Engaged) - this Saturday at Meadowdale Middle School

F.A.C.E. (Families And Communities Engaged) - this Saturday at Meadowdale Middle School

Last year, I got the opportunity to go check out F.A.C.E. (Families And Communities Engaged) hosted by the Edmonds School District to see what it was all about. This event is wonderful for parents, students, and the staff. It's a time when everyone gets to see what the schools have to offer as far as school programs, after school programs, sports, technology, curriculum, even how to teach your child the proper ways of riding the bus to and from school.

If you're interested in learning more about your school or your child's prospective school, this is the way to do it. Everyone from teachers, principals, the superintendent, and volunteers are there to answer any questions you may have. They also have demonstrations and take home information on most of the programs.

Superintendent Nick Brossoit will hold two parent seminars – one over-viewing district highlights and the other on helping your student be successful in school. Between those two seminars, a transition to 7th grade for current 6th grade families will be held from 10 a.m.
