History: Mountlake Terrace makes state in football for 1st time

Submitted by Ray Marcham on Saturday, October 31st, 09:56am

The scenes at Edmonds Stadium were electric, as after 48 years, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks have made the state playoffs in football for the first time in school history.

The Hawks beat Kamiak 21-12 in front of a huge Homecoming crowd to clinch the spot.  That gave MTHS 2nd place in the WesCo South and a home game next Friday against Central Kitsap.

According to the story in the Everett Herald, MTHS first opened in 1961, and had not made the playoffs since they they began in the mid-70s.  Not only is this the first trip to the playoffs for Mountlake Terrace, but it's also the first 6-win season since 1974.

Congrats to the Hawks for making history and good luck against Central Kitsap!

Former employee: Shannon Towing is 'sleazy and unethical'

Submitted by Michelle Esteban on Friday, October 30th, 06:07pm

A former employee of Shannon Towing, Inc. is blowing the whistle of the company, claiming the business doesn't play fair.

Shannon Towing is accused of offering gift cards to business owners in exchange for impound calls. The Washington State Patrol is now investigating the allegations.

The former employee, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was so repulsed by the company's kickback program, among other things, that she eventually ended up leaving her job.

"I think the best word I can come up with is 'sleazy and unethical (sic),"' she said.

She told me when she worked at Shannon, the flier advertising the alleged kickback program was a standard sales tool.

But the company claims to have no knowledge of the deal or the flier.

Beating death called 'honor killing'

Submitted by Associated Press on Friday, October 30th, 09:42am

A 61-year-old man accused of beating his brother to death in Lynnwood told Snohomish County sheriff's detectives it was an honor killing to avenge an insulting remark.

In a police statement filed Thursday in Everett District Court, 61-year-old Mehdi M. Matin says more than 20 years ago his brother uttered words about his bride-to-be so terrible the wedding was called off. Both men are from Afghanistan.

The Everett Herald reports Matin was visiting his brother Monday when he repeated the remark.

Matin told detectives he hit his brother in the head with a pipe until he was unconscious and then strangled him with a rope.

Matin is jailed on $1 million bail for investigation of second-degree murder.

Firefighters go pink for a purpose

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Thursday, October 29th, 09:04pm

When you think firefighters, the color red often comes to mind, but not here.

Sure, the trucks are red, the helmets' black, and the uniforms are normally blue. But this week, the firefighters at Lynnwood's Station 15 are pretty in pink.

"Well, maybe it's a little more of a tough guy image than in pink," said firefighter Julian Aceto.

They're putting on pink for a purpose -- they don't just fight fires, they want to fight breast cancer.

"Unfortunately we see a lot of people at the end stage of this," said Lt. Dennis Kelly. "And if we can get people to detect this early and prevent it will make our job easier."

Kelly says 70 percent of Station 15's calls are emergency medical calls. The shirts serve as a mammogram reminder. In this male dominated department, cancer has touched too many lives.

"My grandmother was a breast cancer survivor," said firefighter Jason Turner.

"My wife had her annual mammogram and had a very scary result," added firefighter Phil Pons.

When firefighters show up in pink, people notice.

"We get a lot of joking around from other firefighters to basic interest from the public," said firefighter Chris Olson.

Leave it to firefighters to make health care an even hotter topic, just ask volunteer Carol Miller.

"They're firemen," she said. "They look good in any color and pink is real good."

The firefighters are also selling pink T-shirts out of their Lynnwood headquarters and donating proceeds to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Towing company accused of offerin incentives for impounds

Submitted by Michelle Esteban on Thursday, October 29th, 06:10pm
Some businesses claim a tow company offered them rewards in exchange for impounds.

Businesses say they were offered gift cards for coffee, spa day, discount chains and gasoline all in exchange for a vehicle they could impound.

Apartment managers and towing competitors say not only is it wrong, they think it's down right predatory.

"It's unethical. It's wrong. It's not how I was raised," said Jennifer Barton of Greenview Apartments.

Barton says a driver for Shannon Towing, Inc. drove by Greenview Apartments in Mountlake Terrace and left her with a flier.

The flier stated Barton could earn gift cards if she would call Shannon Towing with impounds. The more impounds she requested, the more she could make in gift cards, it said.

Three impounds would buy her a $50 gift card to her favorite coffee shop or nail salon.
