Interurban Railway is 100 years old!

Submitted by Heather Reese on Wednesday, February 24th, 03:52pm

Well...almost anyway.

The Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway will turn the big 100 on May 2nd - and you're invited to celebrate in Lynnwood.

Afterall, Alderwood Manor was the mid-point stop on the Interurban line.

Although the railway ceased operation in 1939, the land lived on through the Interurban Trail.

At the event, you'll be able to climb aboard the City of Lynnwood's restored 1910 Niles Trolley and view photos of the historic railway.

Also, authors of the newly released Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway book Cheri Ryan and Kevin Stadler will be there.

Details:
Sunday, May 2, 2010
Heritage Park, 19903 Poplar Way
11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Happening Thursday: Student Showcase

Submitted by Heather Reese on Tuesday, February 23rd, 03:35pm

I imagine it's Lynnwood's version of "American Idol."

But without Simon.

Still - the Student Showcase should make for a great show.

Middle and high school singers, dancers and musicians will take the stage on Thursday the 25th at 7:00 p.m. at the Terraces Food Court at Alderwood Mall.

The performers are the cream of the crop, chosen for their all-star potential:

Blake Blevins - Meadowdale Middle School, Grade 7
Haley Bolin - Meadowdale High School, Grade 9
Shannon Bruno - Lynnwood High School, Grade 12                     Keely Clark - Holy Rosary School, Grade 8
Kyle Eddy, Ashley Giri & Ethan Leese - Lynnwood High School, Grade 12
Michelle Herman - Grade 12
Dawn Madsen - Lynnwood High School, Grade 12
Kontagious Performing Company - Mixed Schools and Grades
Melissa Anne Poole - Grade 12
Taylor Zickefoose - Meadowdale High School, Grade 9

At the end of the show performers will be awarded scholarship checks from the Lynnwood Rotary.

The event is free, but donations will be accepted for the Rotary's scholarship fund.

Lynnwood man seriously injured in fatal I-90 crash

Submitted by Ray Marcham on Saturday, February 20th, 12:13pm

Photo courtesy of the Washington State Patrol

A Lynnwood man was injured in a head-on crash on I-90 near North Bend early Saturday morning that killed a Texas man.

Sylvanus Koudougnon was traveling west on the highway near Milepost 28 when the truck he was driving was hit head-on by a Jeep Cherokee traveling the wrong way on I-90.

Koucougnon was taken to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue for treatment of his injuries.  The driver of the Jeep, a 25-year-old man from Wichita Falls, Texas was killed and his passenger, a woman from Bremerton, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for her injuries.

The Washington State Patrol believes alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Police: 6 arrests in Mill Creek prostitution sting

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Saturday, February 20th, 12:11pm

Mill Creek was the unlikely location for an undercover prostitution sting operation that resulted in six arrests on Friday.

Five women were arrested on suspicion of soliciting prostitution and one man also was arrested on suspicion of promoting prostitution, police said. One woman also was busted for possession of marijuana.

Mill Creek police spokeswoman Sgt. Kate Hamilton said she is not surprised to find prostitution happening in the quiet, mostly upscale town of gated communities.

"It goes on everywhere. I think it's one of those adult activities that can happen anywhere," she said. "No, I am not surprised. I think it's something that maybe the citizens aren't aware of - but it's just something that's going on, probably, like an underbelly - it happens everywhere."

During the sting, police officers responded to advertisements posted in the "adult service" category on the Craigslist web site, and arranged for a meeting at an apartment in Mill Creek.

Undercover officers posed as "Johns" at the apartment and greeted the unsuspecting women when they arrived.

Mill Creek man accused of defrauding victims out of $600k

Submitted by KOMO Staff on Friday, February 19th, 02:09pm

Mildred first contacted Stephen Brombach when she decided to refinance her home six years ago.

Somewhere along the process, Brombach began talking to the woman, then 63, about investing her retirement savings. Brombach told the retirement-approaching bartender he could invest her $50,000 into real estate, and earn her a 6-percent return.

In November 2003, Mildred wrote him a check.

Three years later, Mildred wanted to withdraw a portion of her investment for dental work. But she wasn't returned a dime. A year later, Brombach called to tell her he'd been fired.

Mildred was never given back her $50,000.

The woman's story is just one of 17 outlined by Snohomish County prosecutors in the statement of probable cause against Brombach.

The Mill Creek man has been charged with four counts of unlawful offers, sales or purchases for his alleged defrauding of four Snohomish County residents, including Mildred.

According to prosecutors, Brombach, who owns Integrity Group Insurance and Financial Services in Marysville, convinced his victims to invest more than $600,000 in a phony "Real Estate Investment Fund (REIT).
